Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are different connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
