How to Replace an audi tt key programming G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. 5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi tt key case because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points.
